Find Pain Relief with Acupuncture as a Natural Solution

Published by The Doctors at Sentinel

Do you suffer from persistent pain, such as backaches or migraines? If so, you’re not alone. Pain is a universal experience, affecting countless people across the globe. Searching for relief can be difficult, as can the reliance on the over-the-counter medications. We’re pleased to say that there is a natural solution to pain in acupuncture. This blog post peels back the curtain to reveal how acupuncture can help diminish your pain so that you can get back to enjoying the activities you love most.

    Acupuncture in Chiropractic Care Explained

Acupuncture is a therapeutic technique rooted in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It involves the placement of thin needles at certain points on your body. These points lie along 14 main routes, also known as meridians. Meridians are believed to carry vital energy throughout the body, known as Qi, along with other essential substances such as blood and body fluids. The primary goal is to create a balance in this energy flow and restore overall health.

    The Meridians in Acupuncture

Meridians are channels in which ‘Qi’ flows through. This can be thought of like a highway system within your body. Each meridian is linked to different organs and systems throughout. For instance, the Lung meridian is tied to respiratory health, while the Kidney meridian affects reproductive health and can contribute to lower back pain.

How Acupuncture Works for Pain Management

The insertion of needles stimulates specific points on your body. This triggers the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters that help dull pain signals and decrease inflammation. Each session is tailored to address individual conditions, with various techniques used to stimulate different points along the meridians. These treatments typically last between 30-60 minutes.

What Does an Acupuncture Session Look Like?

During a session, the acupuncturist chooses points based on your particular ailment. They then use various needle techniques to stimulate these points and balance your Qi. Most treatments last between 30 to 60 minutes and are often accompanied by feelings of relaxation.

The Pain Types Acupuncture Can Treat

Acupuncture has proven effective in treating various types of pain, such as arthritis, migraines, sciatica, fibromyalgia, back pain, neck pain, and even menstrual cramps. Overall, it offers a natural and holistic way to manage your pain. Regular sessions can also help reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and even give your immune system a boost.

Acupuncture Points Often Used for Pain Relief

Your acupuncturist’s selection of acupuncture points can vary depending on the specific type of pain, the location of the pain, and your current, overall health. Here are five acupuncture points they might choose which can provide relief of pain:

    1. Zusanli (ST36) in the Stomach Channel: This acupressure point is located on the leg, below the knee. To find it, measure about four finger-widths down from the bottom of the kneecap and one finger-width to the outside of the shin bone. It is beneficial for alleviating digestive disorders, boosting immune function, and reducing fatigue.
    1. Sanyinjiao (SP6) in the Spleen Channel: This acupressure point is located on the inner leg, above the ankle. To find it, measure about four finger-widths above the highest point of the ankle bone. It is beneficial for addressing hormonal imbalances, enhancing digestive health, and supporting the immune system.
    1. Nei Guan (PC6) in the Pericardium Channel: This acupressure point is located on the inner forearm, approximately three finger-widths up from the wrist crease, between the two tendons. It is beneficial for relieving nausea, calming anxiety, and improving heart health.
    1. Tai Chong (LV3) in the Liver Channel: This acupressure point is located on the foot, in the webbing between the big toe and the second toe, approximately two finger-widths back from the margin of the webbing. It is beneficial for alleviating headaches, promoting emotional balance, and reducing high blood pressure.
    1. Bai Hui (GV20) in the Governing Vessel: This acupressure point is located on the top of the head, at the crown. To locate it, draw an imaginary line from the tips of both ears up to the highest point on the head. It is beneficial for treating vertigo, addressing ear and nasal disorders, and alleviating various mental conditions.

How Do People React to Acupuncture?

Everyone’s response to acupuncture is unique. Some feel immediate relief, while others may need a few more sessions. The main takeaway, however, is an improved quality of life. The duration of relief and the frequency of treatments can also vary.
