Blood Sugar Levels and Adrenal Fatigue: How to Eat for Energy

Published by The Doctors at Sentinel

Your adrenal glands perform many important functions in your body. They produce hormones that help your body burn fat and protein, regulate sugar and blood pressure levels, and help you respond to stress.

Adrenal fatigue occurs when your adrenal glands cannot function, commonly due to chronic and prolonged stress. If you are suffering from the condition, you’ll likely feel constantly exhausted and regularly crave salty foods.

In the early stages of adrenal fatigue, you may experience high blood sugar levels. In contrast, low blood sugar is ordinary in the more advanced stages. To treat the symptoms, a healthy diet is recommended.

The primary purpose of an adrenal fatigue diet is to increase your energy levels and naturally regulate your blood sugar levels. Ultimately you are ‘eating for energy’. Here are our top diet tips for combatting adrenal fatigue:

    Eat small, regular meals.

Eating three large meals a day is what many consider normal. However, the truth is that this type of diet can often leave you feeling bloated, sluggish, and tired as your body works overtime to digest the large portions. This can potentially lead to chronic health issues such as insulin resistance.

On the other hand, opting for smaller meals at regular times throughout the day reduces appetite, stabilizes blood sugar levels, and provides a steady stream of nutrients to the body throughout the day.

    Avoid too many processed foods

It’s recommended to only eat processed foods in small amounts due to their high sugar, salt, and fat content. Consuming too many of these ingredients can wreak havoc on your adrenals and leave you feeling exhausted.

Reading nutrition labels can help you keep an eye on the ingredients you are putting into your body. If you crave processed snacks like a chocolate or energy bar, try to replace them with healthier options such as apple slices with peanut butter or yogurt with berries.

    Prioritize B vitamins

B vitamins are essential in converting food into energy, but stress causes your body to use them faster. When treating adrenal fatigue, make sure you reach your daily recommended dose of B vitamins by eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, meat, and fish. If you are not getting enough B vitamins through your diet, then speak to your doctor about supplements.

    Some other tips:

    • Limit alcohol
    • Drink plenty of water
    • Get enough sleep
    • Keep an eye on your Iron levels
    • Consume complex carbohydrates

If you are looking for help addressing the chronic stress causing your adrenal fatigue, then chiropractic care may be the best option.
