Three Common Pediatric Issues and How Chiropractic Care Helps

Published by The Doctors at Sentinel

As soon as a baby is born, their body changes quickly. Bones, muscles, and nerves are all growing and moving, and even tiny twists in the spine (called subluxations) can disrupt the messages that are running between the brain and the rest of the body, causing symptoms like indigestion or physical pain. Gently straightening those twists helps these messages flow again, which can mean calmer tummies, stronger immune systems, and fewer growing pains.

Pediatric chiropractors use only a feather-light touch, about the pressure you’d use to check if a peach is ripe, and they make each visit playful and stress-free for kids. This gentle approach keeps growing kids comfortable, healthy, and thriving by making sure their spines stay perfectly on track. Here are three of the most common problems kids face today, and the simple adjustments that can help each one feel better fast.

Infant Colic & Reflux (Birth – 12 Months)

A difficult or prolonged delivery, forceps or vacuum assistance, along with long spells curled up in car seats can all place strain on a newborn’s delicate neck and upper-back joints. That irritation can irritate the vagus nerve (which is the master communicator between brain and digestive tract). This can lead to persistent crying, arching, gassiness, and nightly spit-ups.

Gentle fingertip adjustments to the top cervical vertebrae and mid-thoracic area calm the vagus nerve, relax the diaphragm, and allow milk to move down the digestive tract instead of back up. Most parents notice deeper sleep and fewer crying bouts within a handful of visits.

    Recurrent Ear Infections (1 – 5 Years)

Toddlers’ Eustachian tubes sit almost horizontal, which makes it harder for fluid to drain after colds or allergy flares. Add lingering birth-related neck tension and frequent tumbles, and the tiny drainage pathways become chronically blocked. This is an open invitation for bacteria.

A pediatric chiropractor uses light cervical adjustments and cranial work (gentle fingertip pressure on skull bones) to free the upper-neck joints and pump lymphatic fluid away from the ears. Many practitioners also weave in Applied Kinesiology muscle testing, as we do here at Sentinel, to identify hidden food sensitivities or nutrient deficits that aggravate inflammation. As alignment and drainage improve, the infection-antibiotic cycle often breaks for good.

    Posture & “Tech-Neck” Strain (6 – 18 Years)

Between heavy backpacks, marathon homework sessions, and constant scrolling, school-age kids and teens are developing adult levels of neck and upper-back tension long before their bones have fully hardened. A forward-tilted head adds up to 12 extra pounds of load for every inch it drifts in front of the shoulders. That sets the stage for tension headaches, early disc wear, and sluggish classroom focus.

Chiropractors address this problem from two angles: precise adjustments to restore the natural cervical curve, and targeted exercises (core activation, chin-tucks, hip openers) to reinforce that new alignment. Kids will leave with ergonomic hacks for tablets and gaming setups, for instance, turning short-term relief into lifelong posture habits.

How Pediatric Adjustments Differ from Adult Treatments

Children’s joints contain more cartilage and open growth plates, so their spines are pliable and quick to change and remodel, for better or for worse. Because of that flexibility, a tiny, well-aimed adjustment can create big results, but too much force risks irritating sensitive tissues. Adults, on the other hand, have fully ossified bones and closed plates; they usually require firmer, deeper adjustments to achieve the same result.

A child’s nervous system is also still learning to regulate immunity, digestion, and emotional balance, which means spinal alignment can influence everything from ear health to mood swings more dramatically than it does in grown-ups. Regular, gentle check-ups, especially during growth spurts, will keep everyday bumps, sports spills, and tech habits from molding a young spine in the wrong direction.

Special Considerations in Pediatric Chiropractic Care

Ultra-Gentle Techniques. Rather than the traditional “pop,” pediatric adjustments rely on light pressure. Most babies sleep right through them, and older kids describe the feeling as a light tap or wiggle.

Parental Partnership. Because kids mimic what they hear at home, chiropractors turn explanations into stories—“We’re helping your superhero nerves talk louder!”—so little patients feel involved and brave. Parents receive homework too: tummy-time tips for babies, backpack-fitting guides for grade-schoolers, and screen-break reminders for teens.

Whole-Body Assessment. A pediatric visit is more than a spinal check. Practitioners can watch milestone movement patterns and test reflexes, plus use muscle testing to flag issues such as vitamin D gaps, food allergies, or gut imbalances. These all can sabotage healing.

Milestone Monitoring. Regular adjustments during rolling, crawling, first steps, and adolescent growth spurts catch small imbalances, like favoring one leg or tilting the head. These could magnify into scoliosis or chronic knee pain later. Early course-correction keeps joints tracking smoothly as children shoot up in height.

Gentle, Drug-Free Relief for Growing Bodies

Tiny bodies don’t move or heal quite like full-grown ones, but that doesn’t mean they have to stay achy or out of sorts. Pediatric chiropractic care provides a natural, drug-free way to provide your child with relief from painful or uncomfortable symptoms, and get back to their playful and energetic selves.
